Sheffield: Our City/Our Future
WHAT’S AT STAKE?
We are promoting an appropriately scaled, imaginatively designed and locally owned solution to the rebuilding of Sheffield city centre. We are challenging current plans to demolish existing good buildings to develop the new Sheffield Retail Quarter.
We are asking, who will own it? Will it really bring economic benefit? Is this really the only way to revive our city centre?
GETTING IT RIGHT...
We want to look at other options, to work towards a more attractive, sustainable, resilient and lived-in city: a real Sheffield, designed and built by and for Sheffield people. Using smaller scale finance in a plot-by plot approach could lead quite quickly to a bright, attractive and distinctive centre. And this approach would preserve more of our precious everyday heritage, that of real streets.
DOES IT MATTER?
We want to see Sheffield city centre thrive as a destination attractive to well-known retailers as well as local independent shops, but our plan would ensure that the flow of wealth from rents and property management fees would remain in the city. Over time the accumulated retained wealth would be of far greater benefit to the people of Sheffield as a whole, and not just a single outside developer.
Sheffield is a city that prides itself on its creativity and tradition of making. That’s why we think that an approach based on working with existing streams of development in the city and engaging local architects, developers and business and community groups for the task is truer to the spirit of the city. We’re using the hashtag #SheffieldbySheffield to reflect this talent and promoting it for general use.
